\nCongratulations to all our friends at “Faith and Football”<\/p>\n

Before having a look at what happened to the disciple James may I first congratulate my friends Linvoy Primus and Mick Mellows, co- Directors of\u00a0 the charity, Faith and Football that \u00a0will be presenting Risen!- The Musical<\/em> with us at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth this coming November.\u00a0 Linvoy has been awarded an M.B.E and Faith and Football have received an MBE equivalent -the Queens Award for Voluntary Services. So many richly deserved congratulations!<\/p>\n

Risen!- The Musical<\/em> features five of Jesus\u2019 disciples – Judas, Peter, Thomas, John and James.\u00a0 Judas was discussed in blog of April 16th<\/sup> Thomas in blog April 9th<\/sup> and Peter last week.<\/p>\n

In blogs April 30th<\/sup> and May 7th<\/sup> I discussed the disciple John, but what about his brother James, also named in by Jesus in Mark 3:17 as a Son of Thunder?\u00a0 By the way this James is not to be confused with James the brother of Jesus or another disciple, James son of Alpheus. \u00a0To help (or to add to the confusion) James brother of John is sometimes known as James the Greater, whereas \u00a0James son of Alpheus is known as \u00a0James the Lesser or Younger.<\/p>\n

The Bible (Matthew 4:21) tells us that James was a fisherman, the brother of John and the son of Zebedee. \u00a0We also know that together with John and Peter, \u00a0James was part of Jesus\u2019 \u201cinner circle\u201d and for example was with Him at His transfiguration (Matthew 17:1) and in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33.)\u00a0 From Acts 12: 2\u00a0 we learn that King Herod (that is Herod Agrippa 1 grandson of Herod the Great) had him put to the sword i.e. beheaded. Anything else we know of James is from tradition rather than from Biblical accounts- one tradition being that after seeing the courage and un- recanting spirit of James, his executioner was so convinced of Christ\u2019s resurrection, that he was executed with him.<\/p>\n

James is the\u00a0patron saint<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Spain<\/a>\u00a0and Portugal. According to one legend, his remains are held in\u00a0Santiago de Compostela<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Galicia<\/a>. (The name\u00a0Santiago<\/em>\u00a0is the local Galician evolution of\u00a0Vulgar Latin<\/a>\u00a0Sanctu Iacobu<\/em>, “Saint James<\/a>“.) The traditional\u00a0pilgrimage<\/a>\u00a0to the grave of the Saint, known as the “Way of St. James<\/a>“, has been the most popular pilgrimage for Western European Catholics from the\u00a0Early Middle Ages<\/a>\u00a0onwards. It was the focus of the film \u201cThe Way\u201d starring Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez and James Nesbitt.<\/p>\n

In Risen!- The Musical<\/em> James sings the songs- \u201cJudas I Don\u2019t Understand,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cJesus Lord of Lords\u201d (in the newly \u00a0revised script) and \u201cBathe Me In Your Light.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what about the other disciples? Next week I will look at traditions that surround other disciples Matthew, Andrew, Bartholomew, Philip, James son of Alpheus, Thaddeus (probably also known as Jude) and Simon the Zealot.<\/p>\n
